Here’s our recommended package for a great value North Wales golf break for 2009, including a round at Royal St David’s.
The beautiful Isle of Anglesey hugs the coast of North Wales and boasts over 100 miles of spectacular coastline within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Some fantastic golf here, and worth the trip alone just to play Nefyn – a truly spectacular course.
Golfers the world over are starting to discover the true potential of golf in this part of the country, which is easily accessisble from Birmingham, Liverpool or Manchester airports. Royal St Davids has long been acknowledged as amongst the very best example of links golf you’ll find anywhere in Britain, while it is the sheer quality of its many other links courses, such as Nefyn that will live equally long in the memory.
Drive through the stunning scenery of the Snowdonia National Park and you will play some majestic links golf along the North coast. Conwy is one such course with some breathtaking holes along the coastline, which was the only course in Wales to host an Open qualifying event in 2006.
Aberdovey Golf Club is set enchantingly within the Snowdonia National Park at the mouth of the Dovey estuary, and the links are wedged between the Cambrian mountain range and the shore.
Llandudno Golf Club (also known as North Wales) overlooks Conwy Bay, and provides a quite stunning links test. It is a natural links course in every aspect with the front nine similar to Troon, in that it runs alongside a railway line with the homeward stretch along the coast.
Nefyn Golf Club, located in the north west coast along the Llyn Peninsula, offers perhaps the most stunning setting for a round of golf in all of Wales. Some of the clifftop holes will literally take your breath away. The closing holes along the peninsula are quite superb and will live long in the memory.
A former president of Royal St David’s put it perfectly: “Harlech is a magical place”. The course is in the shadow of the towering castle built in the 13th century. When the castle was built, the sea lapped the rocks beneath it but over the centuries retreated to leave the expanse of natural linksland that was never meant to be anything but a great golf course.
Beaumaris is a beautiful old town on the eastern side of the Historic Island of Anglesey, with excellent craft shops and lively pubs, cafes and restaurants. The Victorians established sailing in Beaumaris, ‘The Cowes of the North’ and several fleets of classic yachts still sail from the town today.
Beaumaris Castle, begun in 1295, was built as one of the ‘iron ring’ of North Wales castles by the English monarch Edward I and is an awesome sight, regarded by many as the finest of all the great Edwardian castles in Wales.
A place like no other, the Isle of Anglesey offers unparalleled beauty, amazing golf and a warm welcome.
